works Peaux de Clowns

Peaux de clowns, 2025
Textiles, ribbons, bells, leather, acrylic spray, 170 × 100 cm.
Work created during the research and creation residency Après l’Orage at La Maison dans laquelle in Lisle (Dordogne).
A project led by Lola Gonzalès and Malak Maatoug, with the support of the Marie-Thérèse Allier Endowment Fund for Contemporary Art.

During Après l’Orage, I created four costumes inspired by French circuses of the 1930s, the theater of La Maison dans laquelle (formerly Le Trianon), and the notion of cycles. Thus, a costume for morning, afternoon, evening, and night was designed in Lisle.

On July 23, from 8 a.m. until nightfall, I moved through the village wearing the costume corresponding to the time of day. I invited the villagers to wear it for a photograph and a shared moment. At the end of each period, like a theater curtain between the columns of the Place des Halles, I raised each of the costumes.

This work explores a reflection on cycles, itinerancy, and travel. Circuses, troupes, carnivals, trucks, or bicycles traverse villages and/or stay in them. They carry ritual, reenact the itinerant character of earlier times, and contribute to the maintenance and creation of collective and contemporary narratives.
